FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if my pool is leaking or just evaporating?

Do a bucket test. Set a bucket of pool water on a pool step so it sits at the same temperature, mark the water level inside the bucket and on the pool, then compare after 24 hours with the pump on its normal schedule. If the pool drops noticeably more than the bucket, you may have a leak. Our step-by-step guide walks through it.

Why is my pool pump humming but not running?

Common causes include a failed start capacitor, a seized motor bearing, or debris jamming the impeller. Turn the pump off at the breaker and call a pro, because running a humming motor can overheat it. See pump humming causes.

How often should a cartridge or DE filter be cleaned in Phoenix?

There's no single schedule. Watch the pressure gauge instead. Many manufacturers suggest cleaning when pressure rises roughly 8–10 psi above your clean baseline. Dust storms and monsoon debris can load filters quickly. Check your filter's manual.

Is it worth repairing an old pump or replacing it with a variable-speed pump?

It depends on the pump's age, what failed, and how much you run it. See our variable-speed guide for the questions to ask.

Why won't my pool heater ignite?

Gas heaters often fail to fire because of low water flow (a dirty filter or a closed valve), a pressure switch, igniter or flame-sensor issues, or the gas supply. Heat pumps have their own causes. A technician can diagnose it.

Can leaks be found without draining the pool?

Often yes. Leak specialists commonly use dye testing, pressure testing of the plumbing lines and listening equipment while the pool stays full. Methods vary by contractor.

What does the referral service cost me?

Nothing. The independent contractor quotes you directly, and you decide whether to hire them.

Who actually does the work?

An independent contractor, not PHX Pool Medic. Arizona requires contractors to be licensed by the Registrar of Contractors, and you can verify any license at roc.az.gov.

How fast can someone come out?

It depends on the contractor's schedule. We don't promise response times.
